Proof pearl: elementary inductive and integer-based proofs about balanced words

چکیده
Inductive characterizations of words containing the same number of 'a' and 'b' can easily be given. However, formally proving the completeness of some of them turns out to be trickier than one may expect. We discuss and compare two Coq developments relating such balanced words to their inductive characterizations. One is based on auxiliary inductive structures and elementary arguments. The other one is based on a discrete variant of the intermediate value theorem.

Connection-Driven Inductive Theorem Proving
We present a method for integrating rippling-based rewriting into matrix-based theorem proving as a means for automating inductive specification proofs. The selection of connections in an inductive matrix proof is guided by symmetries between induction hypothesis and induction conclusion. Unification is extended by decision procedures and a rippling/reverse-rippling heuristic. Conditional subst...
متن کاملAndrews-Curtis and Todd-Coxeter proof words
Andrews and Curtis have conjectured that every balanced presentation of the trivial group can be transformed into a standard presentation by a finite sequence of elementary transformations. It can be difficult to determine whether or not the conjecture holds for a particular presentation. We show that the utility PEACE, which produces proofs based on Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration, can produce ...

متن کاملAn ILP-based Proof System for the Crossing Number Problem
Formally, approaches based on mathematical programming are able to find provably optimal solutions. However, the demands on a verifiable formal proof are typically much higher than the guarantees we can sensibly attribute to implementations of mathematical programs. We consider this in the context of the crossing number problem, one of the most prominent problems in topological graph theory. Th...
متن کاملInstantiation of Existentially Quantified Variables in Inductive Specification Proofs
Fourth International Conference Artificial Intelligence and Symbolic Computation, Plattsburgh, NY, September 1998. LNAI 1476, pp. 247–258, Springer Verlag, 1998. Abstract. We present an automatic approach for instantiating existentially quantified variables in inductive specifications proofs. Our approach uses first-order meta-variables in place of existentially quantified variables and combine...
